The Most Diabetic Counties in America

For the 9.3 percent of Americans who have diabetes, the condition can be very serious. In 2014, diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death, with over 76,000 Americans losing their lives to it. Luckily, diabetes can most often be managed. Experts recommend that exercising 30 minutes daily and losing five to 10 percent of your body weight if overweight can prevent diabetes or delay the onset of symptoms. A number of other factors – impacted by where you live – can have an impact on your risk for diabetes. Using the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HealthGrove, a health care research and analysis site powered by Graphiq, compiled a ranking of the 50 counties and parishes across America with the highest rates of diabetes. Counties and parishes are ranked in ascending order, from lowest to highest rate of diabetes in 2013. In cases where multiple counties had the same rate, counties with higher rates of diabetes in 2012 are ranked higher on the list. Diabetes appears to be a far greater problem in the South than anywhere else in the country. Six of the top seven counties on our ranking are in Alabama, and 31 of the top 50 counties and parishes are in either Alabama or Mississippi. Five counties from South Dakota are also included. Note: The percentages of people with diabetes used for these rankings are age-adjusted by the CDC. This means that they control for differences in the population age structure between counties.Hoonah-Angoon Census Area, Petersburg Borough, Prince of Wales-Hyder Census Area, and Wrangell Borough – all in Alaska – did not report data in 2013.
